Government Rebates

Sometimes dental treatments qualify for special government assistance. There are several Medicare schemes operated by the federal government providing assistance to special needs groups. These include:

Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Scheme

Did you know that you may be eligible for up to $4,250 through Medicare?

The Medicare Chronic Disease Dental Scheme was introduced in November 2007. Chronically ill people, who are being managed by their GP under an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, can access Medicare rebates for dental services.

Medicare benefits are available for most services provided by a dentist, dental specialist or dental prosthetist in private dental surgeries.

You must meet certain eligibility criteria and be referred by your GP to a dentist. Your GP will refer you directly to Gentle Dental Care for necessary restorative treatments (such as fillings, implants, dentures) that may be required to restore you to sound dental health.

Teen Dental Plan

The Australian Government introduced the Medicare Teen Dental Plan to help with the cost of an annual preventative dental check for eligible teenagers aged 12–17 years. Those eligible include anyone…

• Receiving Abstudy, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment, Special Benefit, Youth Allowance; or
• Whose family/carer/guardian received Family Tax Benefit Part A (FTB-A) or Parenting Payment, of the Double Orphan Pension for the teenager; or
• Whose partner receives FTB-A or Parenting Payment; or
• 16 years or older and receiving financial assistance under the Veterans’ Children Education Scheme eligible to claim Medicare Benefits

Services include:

• X-rays
• scale and clean
• fluoride treatment
• seal pits or cracks in a tooth.
